Preparation
Can peanut butter hay stacks be made ahead of time?
Yes! These can be made a day or two in advance and stored at room temperature in an airtight container until ready to serve.
Why are they called haystacks?
Simply because of how they look when finished! They look like little peanut buttery, butterscotch stacks of hay.
Storage and leftovers
How long do butterscotch haystacks last?
These can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 5 days. We don’t recommend storing these in the fridge as they may get soggy.
Can you freeze them?
Yes! After the stacks have set, set them on a lined baking sheet and flash freeze them in the freezer. Once frozen, you can store them in a sandwich bag or an airtight container. Freeze up to 3 months, thaw at room temperature.
Tips and tricks
✅ Add sprinkles to the top before placing in the fridge for a festive touch.
✅ Make sure not to overheat the butterscotch chips in the microwave as they can seize up. Microwave in short increments, stirring after each time.
✅ Swap half of the butterscotch chips for chocolate chips for a spin on the flavor.
✅ When scooping the hay stacks onto the baking sheet, make them larger or smaller depending on your preference.
✅ Make sure to line your baking sheet to prevent the hay stacks from sticking.
